We are five people who just moved in US and live Washington DC for a month. Since we moved from Turkey to here, we lived some interesting and awkward situations. Purpose of this Blog is to tell this stories to you. You Americans have a expression for this. “Fish Out of Water”
Our first history is about tips. In Turkey, we don’t need to leave tips in everywhere. Generally, people leave tips in luxury restaurants. Also, in turkey, there is no rule about tips. Due to this differences, our Turkish friends who went to US are always warn us to this tips rules. They said to us ”In Amerıca you need to leave tips and it must at least %15 of check”. So, when we came to US, we aware of this tip rules. However, One day, we took a cap went to school. When we get out of the car, we don’t leave tips because we thought that we don’t need to leave tips in taxi. In Turkey nobody leave tips in taxi. So, taxi driver started to yell at us and said, “This is America, if you leave here you need to obey the rules and leave tips.” We all are ashamed. Eventually, we understood that in America, wherever you go, you need to leave tips.
Our second history is about traditional differences between US and Turkey. When we are came to here, we hanged out in Dc and we explored a lot of places but something is to been of interest. While we are walking on the street, there was many people that they was laughing and smiling to us and we was surprised also they said that “HEY”, ’How is going’ etc. Generally, these conditions don’t come upon in turkey but lets think about if it happened. If it will happen in Turkey, some people may think that ‘Oahh ! Why this girl or this man was smiling to me. I wonder she or he likes me ? It becomes interesting to Usa people this thing but in turkey, many people thinks like that but if you wonder my opinion about this situation, I would say that, American people are very amiable and this is so nice. As a result, when we will come back to Turkey, we will do smiling to people as USA people and we will find out their response.
In United States, for us most interesting situation is taking foods from restaurants if your meal is not finish. In Turkey, you cannot take foods if you not finish your meal. 2 weeks ago we went to Steak House restaurant in Virginia with our American friend. The restaurant was very lux and high society. Prices were very high. And we eat a steak, salad and lots of things. That's why we were full we ness and she did not finished her meal. She asked to waitress to wrap her steak. I was shocked. Because in Turkey if you make something like that people thinks its so blot. Especially in lux restaurant you cannot make this behavior. But in America its so normal. And when I think, its so logical. Because you pay for this meal and you should pick up. There are lots of differences between Turkey and America but this was the really stranger thing I have ever see.
The 10th day of the school in DC, we need to go to my friend's school urgently and I have to use taxi to be in there on time. We found a taxi and its driver was a black American. When I got on the taxi, he asked me that "How will you pay the bill?" and I sad "I will pay it with credit card". I didn't know how far is the address from there and driver said "It is near to here and it will cost to you approximately 10$, don't you have any cash?", I said "No". After that he started to drive the car and 10 minutes later I was at in front of my friend's school and the time for pay. This was my first time of paying a taxi's money with card. It was around 9$ and driver said "You need to add some tip to the machine" and I said "How can I do it?", answer was "Only write it on the machine". I wrote 0.1 wrongly and pushed the Enter. The driver turned back and said "What type of a tip is this maaan?" After I said "I am sorry dear it was my fault". He wasn't so happy because of this and after I gave him one dollar more and I asked "Is it OK now?" and he said "OK OK". after I got of from the taxi and I said "Have good day dear." but he didn't say anything and went..
As a result, differences between countries that we have to accept those differences. Since we came to America we saw many cultural differences. Sometimes we didn’t understand people's reactions. Sometimes reactions seems odd to us. As we mentioned at the beginning of the composition "fish out of water" statement tells our situation completely. This situation is not including only our situation. It includes many people who moved to different countries.
